Poetry Chapbook Reviews (Pinyon)

2015 Pinyon cover design, that I formatted myself.

These two reviews were included in the 2015 Edition of Pinyon, Colorado Mesa University’s journal of poetry and prose, for which I served as Managing Editor that academic year.

Every Root a Branch by Elizabeth Rees (Codhill Press, 2014, $16.00)

Elizabeth Rees’ first book skillfully weaves past and present, religion and modernity to present to readers nostalgic reminisces of one’s culture and homeland. Through various Biblical and cultural references, Rees combines both religious devotion and the ins and outs of everyday life, particularly domesticity: “In the morning I will sort his clothes / for Sabbath and the week. / Or should I start the soup?” (“By My Husband’s Book”). Indeed, Rees’ verse addresses every facet of human life, from love, sex, war and death, to emotions such as fear, pride, anger and doubt:  “I’m no Moses. I am terrified / the sea won’t divide before I can cross. / I stand watching it happen, dumb as a statue / in sandals” (“Bondage”). Through use of first person indicative, such as, “I am taking your hands off / my body. Taking your eyes / out of my forehead, footsteps / of your words off my spine (“In Return”), Rees’ verse deals powerfully with the obstacles of life. Just like the title of the work itself, Rees’ poems branch out to touch upon a plethora of topics and emotional states, yet each work remains rooted in exploring the pleasures and frustrations of family bonds and religious practices, making for both an insightful and inspiring read.

Café Culture by Grace Bauer (Imaginary Friend Press, 2013, $7.00)

Whether you share Grace Bauer’s unabashed affection for coffee or completely steer clear of the drink, Bauer’s fourth chapbook Café Culture has something for everyone to enjoy. The very magic of the verses lie within Bauer’s skillful depictions of scenes played out and observed in public: “That’s a bummer, says the plus-sized blue-haired lady / in the booth behind mine at the Village Inn” (“Noel”). By taking the role of keen observer, Bauer presents readers with a colorful array of characters and situations that often attest to the complexities and clichés of modern life: “Hard to tell madness from commerce / these days, distinguish between / a schizophrenic and a CEO / tethered to a Bluetooth” (“Ranters”). By combining detailed descriptions and humor, Bauer’s witticisms, inspired by her role as proud coffee shop patron, strike a chord among coffee addicts or those who simply like to people watch–or eavesdrop–in public spaces.
